Vicky and Joe continue their discussion on how to build trust with others. Vicky shares that a limp handshake, an overuse of a name, and staring into someone’s eyes for too long are all great ways to break trust and rapport with someone. However, it’s important to work on these things where you can get it down to a moderate and comfortable level because they’re also fantastic ways to build trust and safety with others.

Key Takeaways:

[3:25] Joe gives a quick recap on how you can project confidence.

[4:05] How much is too much eye contact?

[7:15] Vicky hates, hates a limp handshake!!

[12:25] Are you an expert handshaker? Vicky would like to hear from you!

[13:15] Mirroring people’s actions actually helps to build trust.

[13:45] Use people’s names, but don’t force it. Overuse of a name raises Vicky’s alarm bells.

[15:25] It’s almost impossible to not smile at someone when they smile at you.

[20:20] If someone takes a step back or is retreating from your ‘space’, don’t follow them!

[21:10] What is the ‘super hero’ pose?

[24:55] Joe advises that in any situation where there are engineers, don’t touch them.

[25:10] Watch a video of yourself! It may be uncomfortable, but it’s very helpful insight.

[28:35] Next week’s topic will be about taking responsibility for everything in your life! Yay!

Body language!!! That’s the topic of today’s show. Vicky hates talking on the phone for this very reason—she can’t see you. So much gets lost in translation when you’re unable to see people’s faces and bodies. There are also unconscious signals you’re sending to others by the way you stand, walk, and look. On the show, Vicky shares ways you can appear more genuine and confident through your body language.

Key Takeaways:

[3:35] Some people just have a presence, an energy, about themselves.

[4:25] Isn’t it amazing that we’re alive today? It’s chaos out there in nature!!!

[7:30] Vicky hates talking to people on the phone because she can’t see their faces and read their body language.

[10:05] Do you know when the first emoticon was invented?

[14:55] Your face has telltale signs when you don’t understand something.

[20:25] When you’re giving a speech, look at your audience! It conveys confidence!

[22:35] How much eye contact is too much eye contact? Tune in next week to find out!

[24:30] Really check and understand why what you’re talking about is important. It will make you feel more confident during your presentation.

[25:35] Did you know posture can improve your mood?

[28:20] Cultivate a habit of people watching to see how they behave.

On today’s episode, Vicky and Joe share their thoughts on what makes a person charismatic. If you’re not charismatic at all, don’t worry! Charisma can be learned! Vicky and Joe discuss ways you can become a more charismatic, more confident person and why several leaders often have this trait built into them.

Key Takeaways:

[2:10] What’s the worst thing that could happen during a dance competition? Well...let Vicky tell you.

[4:25] Despite the setbacks, Vicky won her first pole dancing competition!

[7:25] What famous people can you think of that have charisma?

[9:55] Let’s back up, what is charisma?

[12:20] Public service announcement: Don’t buy Maybelline makeup products as they still test on animals. Vicky loves Urban Decay products.

[14:25] The good news is you can learn how to be charismatic.

[17:00] What are some of the things charismatic people do very well?

[19:25] It took Vicky a while to recognize that she was a leader to her superhero group.

[20:30] To be a leader and to run a successful business, you need to be a little arrogant and a little bit confident.

[22:35] What can you do if you don’t feel confident?

[26:00] Many charismatic people are also very kind people.

[30:00] Remember, life is a work in progress.

Vicky and Joe discuss some of their favourite stories on this week’s podcast. Why are stories so important? Well, because we are wired for them. Nobody really remembers the facts and figures, but we do remember the story behind it. Stories help people picture themselves with a brighter future and this is one of the many reasons why you need to be telling stories in your business to have your customers take action!

Key Takeaways:

[2:10] This week’s podcast is all about storytelling.

[2:45] What are some of Joe’s favourite stories?

[4:00] What are some of Vicky’s favourite stories?

[6:55] Vicky hated history when she was in uni. It was awful and boring.

[8:35] However, you can fix ‘boring’ subjects really easily if you had a teacher who was a really good story teller. The same applies to your business!

[11:55] Stories are part of our evolutionary makeup.

[13:40] When we tell a story, we help people see a brighter future.

[16:20] Our brains don’t actually distinguish between reading an experience vs. actually having that experience in real life.

[17:35] Very few people are able to remember facts and figures, but almost everyone remembers the story.

[20:25] You need to get people to feel things, and stories help you do that.

Vicky and Joe continue their discussion about how to discover your ideal customer demographic through the use of….empathy! It is not enough to know their age, job title, and marital status. No, you need to dig deeper. You need to pull at their heartstrings, because no one buys based purely on facts alone. What does your customer do on Sunday and Monday mornings? This insight is valuable and over 90% of businesses don’t take this extra step to truly get to know their customer’s pain.

Key Takeaways:

[0:45] It’s Vicky’s birthday tomorrow!

[4:20] The more Vicky thinks about people, the more she realizes that having empathy just doesn’t happen naturally to most of us.

[9:00] Having empathy is incredibly important if you want to sell to people.

[9:25] We spend a lot of time speaking in fact, but that’s not what gets people to buy.

[12:55] You need to get into your customer’s heads.

[13:50] What does your target market do on Sunday and Monday mornings, and why?

[18:10] If your target market rides the tube every morning, well, get on the tube! This is research!

[20:10] Vicky learned an interesting lesson from the muppets.

[22:20] Don’t just ask your target audience questions, but watch them (in a non-creepy way).

[26:50] What’s the takeaway for this episode? Learn how to empathize!

Do you feel like you’re shooting in the dark when it comes to your marketing? Targeting everyone and their dog probably isn’t the best idea. It’s expensive and it can discourage you when you see a fleeting ROI. Many businesses understand the importance of knowing their demographics, but they often stop there. They don’t dive deeper; they don’t know what truly motivates someone into buying. That’s the difference between an interested crowd and a starving crowd.

Key Takeaways:

[1:25] Who is Gary Halbert?

[6:15] Who is your ideal customer? Anybody with money is the wrong answer.

[7:35] Vicky asked her subscribers what their biggest challenge was. She got a response back that was kind of ridiculous.

[11:05] Hey, by the way, Vicky would love to hear from you. Have you taken her up on her advice recently from the podcast? Write to her what your experience was like!

[13:15] Instead of spending $10k on everybody and his dog, spend $1k on advertising reaching out to a focused group.

[14:15] Think about your advertising strategy in terms of ROI, not in terms of how many people see it.

[15:05] How do you find your starving crowd?

[17:00] How does Vicky know she’s found her starving crowd?

[22:20] When you want to really discover who your starving crowd is, it boils down to actually talking to them, not looking at the statistics of whom your product is good for.

[24:10] Don’t just stop at the demographics. Dig deeper and find out what motivates them.

[25:00] Tune in next week to discover how to dig deeper and find that motivation!

[3:55] What is Misty currently working on?

[6:40] When it comes to copywriting, different words appeal best to men vs. women.

Dear listener, do you have an opinion? Vicky hopes you do! People do not change the way they speak or interact with someone the moment they get into the office, so why should you suppress or hide your opinions when you’re an expert in your field? Having an opinion, having a stance, being a bit offensive or against the grain, gets people paying attention. Yes, they might hate you, but so what?

Key Takeaways:

[5:00] People want you to have an opinion.

[8:50] If you say something that offends someone, it’s going to be okay.

[10:55] You don’t suddenly become a different person just because you walked into your office! So, why are you suppressing yourself?

[12:10] There are so many fake people out there because they’re too afraid to be themselves.

[12:35] There’s a difference between being nice and being kind.

[13:25] Why should you ‘be you’ in business?

[17:00] There are some people who will have an opinion on everything regardless if they know it or not.

[18:20] With that being said, If you have a strong opinion about your industry or your expertise, put it out there!

[19:25] Be prepared to change your mind when presented with new information.

[25:00] Not sure where to start?

[12:55] So, who are you?

Episode 10: Quick Strategies to Increase Your Sales with Oli Luke

Feb 16, 2018

There are thousands, millions, of copywriters, marketers, builders, you name it, but what makes you unique? What makes you so special? Well, Vicky and Joe discuss ways you can stand out and get people interested in your service beyond just your prices. Because, if you offer the same value and service as your competitor, then people are only going to pay the cheapest price for it; and that’s the worst possible position you can be in.

Key Takeaways:

[0:50] This house is not warm. Whose idea was it to buy a 17th century cottage house in the middle of nowhere?

[2:15] What is Elephant Gin and what do they do?

[3:35] Today, we’ll be talking about what makes you so special!

[5:40] Why are we going to Mars? Because we can.

[9:15] Elon Musk could have just launched a rocket into space and called it a day, but no, he created a show out of it.

[9:55] What you’re offering isn’t really unique.

[10:35] So, how can you stand out?

[12:30] For the love of all things holy, please don’t say you’re ‘passionate’ about what you do on your website. That’s just bad marketing and copy.

[13:55] If you’re the same as everybody else and listing the same things everyone else is, how will they choose you? They will choose you based solely on price.

[15:00] Most business owners panic when they have to come up with why they’re unique.

[18:00] When the MacBook Air first came out, people were like ‘WOW’. It was the world’s thinnest notebook.

[21:55] You can pick a feature that makes you stand out as long as it’s not a generic feature like, ‘excellent service’. Vicky offers some helpful examples.

How to Live with a Dickhead, by Vicki La Bouchardiere

Feb 2, 2018

We are wired to be social beings. We need a tribe to help us survive and thrive, which means we need to fit in as much as we can. However, in business, it’s almost exactly the opposite. We need to stand out and be different, but throughout the years, and centuries, this has proven to be very dangerous to do. Standing out too much meant you could be ostracized from society. So, it makes sense why you might have some real and deep fears about showing up in a way that’s different and eye-catching in your business.

Key Takeaways:

[3:10] Vicky’s new book is coming along nicely.

[4:25] Why are you such a scaredy cat, dear listener?

[6:40] Vicky has a recurring fear that stems from her awkward childhood days.

[13:00] As an introvert, Joe never really quite understood what the big deal was about being ostracized from a society.

[14:50] Standing out from the crowd is socially risky. Rejection is actually quite horrible for us as humans.

[17:00] You’d be surprised by how many people are chronically lonely. In fact, social media gives us the illusion that we’re connected to others online, but it’s making the problem worse.

[19:00] While it’s important that you fit in socially, it’s almost suicide business-wise to do that.

[24:35] Vicky is always skeptical about people who proclaim having a 6 or 7-figure launch. What really went on behind the scenes for you to achieve that? How many refunds did you have to do?

[28:35] Everybody has that ‘thing’ that they haven’t done because they’re afraid. Well, here’s your chance. Go out and do it!

[30:15] By the way, you should definitely join the inner circle group. It’s the perfect place where you can talk to people who finally get it and get you.

On last week’s podcast, Vicky discussed how you can get your goals done and stop slacking off. Well, taking her own advice, she implemented what she said she would do, and she’s very happy with her progress so far. She’s also added in 15 minute buffers between tasks so that she can take small breaks throughout the day. She has found that by doing this, her day has become so much more enjoyable and stress-free!

Key Takeaways:

[2:30] Vicky has some amazing news to share!

[3:55] On a side note, Vicky accidentally played jenga with her brick house.

[4:45] Vicky was able to take two days off last week and hang out with four generations of family members!

[6:00] During these two days, did Vicky slack off with work? No!

[8:55] Vicky was able to do all of this without waking up at 5am and eating kale like a douche canoe!

[9:55] Vicky is really happy with the progress she's made so far. Last year, it was a big struggle to be productive.

[10:25] Vicky took her own advice and followed through on what she said last week.

[12:15] Vicky has put 15 minute gaps in between tasks so she can take a break and reset.

[13:55] Everything Vicky is doing is just so much more enjoyable.

[14:05] Vicky hasn't been the only one who’s been productive. What has Joe been up to lately?

[15:20] Why is contact switching bad for our productivity?

[16:10] Joe has been keeping track of how many contact switches he gets a day. He estimates it has been around 30.

[18:15] Homework: Every time you get interrupted with something, write it down. Once you have a list, pick one thing that you can fix or eliminate from the list and get to work!

[19:35] Some exciting things are happening in Joe's office!

[21:35] Final takeaway: Pick one big goal (only one!) and break it into tiny pieces.

[21:55] If you're struggling with achieving your goals, get somebody to help you!

[22:00] By the way, Vicky is available for coaching. Get in touch if you’re interested.

[24:35] Also, join Vicky’s Book Club. It’s free!

Welcome to 2018 everyone! On this week’s show, Vicky and Joe discuss their plans for the new year and why some people constantly struggle with achieving their big plans year over year. Vicky highly recommends you read the 12 Week Year by Brian Moran and Michael Lennington to help you get a more realistic timeframe on each of your goals. Break those big tasks into smaller time periods so that you don’t slack off!

Key Takeaways:

[1:00] Happy 2018!

[4:40] What are Vicky’s and Joe’s plans for the new year?

[6:05] Why do some people have a hard time achieving their goals?

[7:25] Planning goals with a year timeframe allows you to slack off. Plan for 12 weeks instead.

[11:20] Everybody has a plan until they get punched in their face.

[12:05] Put your plan on paper. If it doesn’t work on paper, then there’s no way it’ll work in real life!

[14:50] What do you want for your future self? What do you want for your business? Map out your ‘why’ in life.

[15:45] Stop using ‘I don’t have time’ as an excuse. We have plenty of time.

[18:10] How does Vicky allocate her hours each week?

[22:05] Vicky breaks down the goals she has for 2018.

[25:20] Read the 12 Week Year! You won’t regret it.

[25:35] It’s important to have one, and only one, big goal for each area of your life. You’ll get overwhelmed if you have too many.
