Notes in the Margin

This is a podcast about one woman's mission to help entrepreneurs and business owners write and self-publish better business books. Each week, we tackle your writing excuses (because they're our excuses too) – and help you beat the Blank Page Of Doom so you can write a book that makes a real difference. Also contains adulting fails, the adventures of the TinySheeps, and a bundle of fantastic interviews with people far smarter than us. Find us at moxiebooks.co.uk.

Vicky and Joe discuss some of their favourite stories on this week’s podcast. Why are stories so important? Well, because we are wired for them. Nobody really remembers the facts and figures, but we do remember the story behind it. Stories help people picture themselves with a brighter future and this is one of the many reasons why you need to be telling stories in your business to have your customers take action!

Key Takeaways:

[2:10] This week’s podcast is all about storytelling.

[2:45] What are some of Joe’s favourite stories?

[4:00] What are some of Vicky’s favourite stories?

[6:55] Vicky hated history when she was in uni. It was awful and boring.

[8:35] However, you can fix ‘boring’ subjects really easily if you had a teacher who was a really good story teller. The same applies to your business!

[11:55] Stories are part of our evolutionary makeup.

[13:40] When we tell a story, we help people see a brighter future.

[16:20] Our brains don’t actually distinguish between reading an experience vs. actually having that experience in real life.

[17:35] Very few people are able to remember facts and figures, but almost everyone remembers the story.

[20:25] You need to get people to feel things, and stories help you do that.

[22:00] Shout out to Eric, Vicky’s audio editor!
