Tim Fitch is the Owner and Director of Invennt, a business development company that works with construction companies to improve their objectives and goals. He loves to expand his network and get to know new people. On the show, Tim shares stories on how you can differentiate yourself from the crowd at those ‘icky’ networking events and build deep connections at breakfast meetings.

Key Takeaways:

[1:50] Who is Tim and what does he do?

[4:00] Tim shares his ‘kidney stone’ story.

[7:00] Tim explains how he helps his clients save money in the construction industry.

[9:40] There are two lessons you can learn from Tim’s story. Tell a story to get people engaged and if you have an idea, jump on it!

[11:20] Tim dives into why he started his breakfast networking events.

[14:10] Every person Tim meets, he hands them his business card and expects to get one in return.

[16:15] Get started by going to networking events, but go with a purpose!

[18:25] How do you initiate a conversation with a prospect at a networking event?

[21:55] When Tim sits down with a prospect at a restaurant, he then shows them pictures of him in his underpants. He explains why he does this (it’s not as creepy as it sounds, promise).

[25:55] Tim’s example is one of the ways you can change the tone of the meeting and make yourself memorable (in a good way).

[30:50] Check Tim out on LinkedIn. He is doing some cool stuff on there!

Vicky recently attended a handstand workshop and her teacher’s dedication to his craft is one of the perfect examples as to why there’s no such thing as an overnight success. Progress is made in tiny beetle steps and it can get discouraging after the novelty of your big project wears off, but you have to keep at it if you want to see long-term success.

Key Takeaways:

[0:45] Vicky and Joe are freezing their bits off!

[3:15] Vicky went to a handstand workshop and sort of broke herself. She is sore all over.

[3:45] Did you know that chickens are not built for snow?

[6:40] Today, we’ll be talking about tiny beetle steps! Progress is made in tiny steps.

[9:40] We get really excited when it’s new, but then we get distracted when the shininess begins to wear off.

[13:45] With any big project, it’s really exciting to start, but keeping up the work is the real challenge.

[15:15] Overnight successes are very, very rare.

[16:00] Vicky shares an example about business and ‘sticking with it’ from the handstand workshop she took recently.

[20:30] At the end of the day, it’s all about tiny progress to help you get to where you want to go.

[21:15] Vicky writes an email every single day. It pays off!

[21:55] What small things can you do everyday that will get you closer to your goal?

Do you struggle with keeping focused? You’re not alone. Vicky also struggles because she gets excited about doing ‘all the things’. However, Joe is here to help her! He worked out a process to help her become more focused and to avoid that dreaded shiny object syndrome. On this episode, Joe breaks down his process and asks Vicky (and you!) a series of questions on where your goals and priorities are right now.

Key Takeaways:

[0:45] Vicky and Joe find themselves in Cork, Ireland right now!

[1:25] Just a heads up, sometimes Vicky is not perfect.

[1:45] Vicky has a hard time keeping focused. She just wants to do ‘all the things’ always!
[3:30] Joe has recently come up with a process to help Vicky stay focused. It might help you as well.

[4:15] However, please bear with him as he’s been drinking beer and this is the first time he has had to explain how this process works.

[4:40] First things first, what are the goals of Vicky’s business?

[5:30] Vicky would like to take 3 months off every year in her business.

[7:25] Vicky would love to educate children and show them alternative ways to make money than the standard 9 to 5.

[10:15] Joe asks Vicky how she manages her time while she’s doing all these essential things, like marketing and creating products, for her business.

[12:15] Vicky has an app that blocks her from using Facebook while she is working.

[12:45] What kinds of products and stuff does Vicky generate?

[14:40] What kinds of things should you be measuring in your business? Don’t just focus only on the end results. It can distract you from doing the mundane tasks that actually work.

[16:30] Is the stuff you’re currently doing taking you closer to your goals?

[18:10] Remember, results happen in tiny increments.

[19:40] Picture yourself having to explain yourself, and what you do, to your bank manager, your mum, your spouse, and your older yourself (who is ten years older).

[22:35] Vicky is excited! She’s about to change systems that will help automate her business more and give her assistant less work to do!

Vicky recently got back from her trip to Turkey and she has found herself trying to do ‘all of the things’. [1:45] What’s the biggest complaint clients have, especially women, about photographing themselves?

People have a hard time telling their own story, they might think it’s not interesting or worth anybody’s time, but they’re wrong! Everybody’s story is unique and interesting. If you were to think carefully, who else in your life would be able to tell your story? Don’t be afraid to share your story and refine it as you go. Good stories have rhythm and a ‘musical’ feel to them.

Key Takeaways:

[2:15] If anyone wants to send Vicky and Joe a bottle of gin, please do!

[4:45] If you ever decide to go on holiday to Costa Rica, go for at least two weeks, especially if you’re in the UK. It’s a LONG flight.

[8:25] Also, another Costa Rican lesson: Get a 4x4 car. It is a must because the roads are awful.

[9:50] This week, Vicky will be talking about storytelling!

[10:40] Does anybody in your life know you well enough to tell your story?

[16:55] The first book that had a profound effect on Vicky was To Kill a Mockingbird.

[22:35] How can you tell your story (in an interesting way)?

[28:00] Good stories have rhythm and a ‘musical’ feel to them.

[30:00] Homework this week: Go forth and talk to people. Ask them about their story, especially people older than you.

[31:45] Pay attention to stories that really grip you, and then study them.

Key Takeaways:

[1:25] Happy 100th podcast birthday!

[3:30] How can you grab someone’s attention in this busy, busy world?

[6:45] Customers want to be entertained.

[9:00] You need to excite people as well as inform people!

[10:15] Vicky wants to be a drag queen. Wait! She has an explanation.

[11:10] There’s too much of everything in the world. People are overwhelmed with information!

[14:15] Vicky would write her daily emails to literally nobody. It was just Joe and her mom subscribed to her list, but she kept at it.

[17:55] Take a look at some of the shows that are really popular right now.

[18:10] How can you make your brand marketing funny, sad, or exciting?

[20:45] Darren Ross turns up at trade shows dressed as a superhero. He does well because trade shows are boring!

[23:25] So, what can you do to put on a show for your business?

[25:50] Eye contact works! You need to use it much more while you’re on stage.

[28:00] Take your next marketing piece and entertain your customer. Create a show specifically designed for your audience, and make them feel something.

[28:45] Are you struggling to find ideas on how to entertain your audience? Well, Vicky is really good at coming up with ideas like this! You can go to Borrow My Brain if you need some help!

It’s no secret Steve McQueen was a chauvinist, a very cocky asshat, and even a huge diva. He was such a pain to work with, so why, and how, did he get so famous to the point where everyone just tolerated him? For all of Steve McQueen’s faults, he knew how to do one thing correctly, which was live by his own rules. Let’s find out how you can use this skillset to be the top dog in your industry.

Side note: Please do not be the chauvinist of your industry. That wouldn’t be good.

Key Takeaways:

[3:00] For those who are watching video, do you think video destroys Joe’s ‘charm’?

[5:35] Let’s talk about Steve McQueen. He was a very charismatic man.

[8:35] However, Steve was a known adulterer, having slept with most of his leading ladies, and he was married three times.

[9:40] How did Steve get to be so famous where he could behave like such an ass on set?

[11:45] You know who else was a pain in the ass? Marlon Brando.

[13:20] How did Marlon Brando make so much money ($50m of today’s money) when he never even bothered to learn his lines?! In the Godfather, he also refused to wear trousers throughout the entire movie!!! HOW!!!

[17:15] If you’re good at what you do, you can make your own rules and no one can do anything about it except obey.

[20:20] Really think about what kinds of things you’ll put up with and what kinds of things are acceptable to you.

[22:55] Tune in next week for the big 100th episode!

[10:00] 900 children under the age of five die every day from diarrhea-related diseases.

[10:05] Consistency is so important and it is what makes you money. You have to be very consistent when it comes to building traffic for your website.

[10:25] Daisy writes between 5-6 days a week.

[11:45] After being in business for a year, Daisy was able to make $1,000 a month on her blog. It was challenging.

[13:10] Since then, Daisy has written a total of 3 books and it has provided her with a steady source of additional income.

[13:45] Don’t turn your nose up at Amazon affiliates, Daisy says. They only pay 4%, but the money can add up.

[14:10] With that being said, you don’t want to rely too heavily on one source of income. You have to be well-diversified.

This episode is a rerun show from back in 2016! Join Vicky in the very early stages of her podcast (episode 8) as she discusses time and productivity with her husband, Joe. Remember, everyone has the same amount of hours, minutes, and seconds in one day, so we have to make the most of it. You are entitled to your time!

Key Takeaways:

[2:00] You don't have time? This is an EXCUSE!

[6:15] Be honest, you do have time.

[6:45] You're better off just saying no instead of 'I don't have time'.

[10:45] Don't have time to do marketing? Do you mean you're just a little overwhelmed?

[11:45] Marketing is important.

[12:25] It can be a frustrating circle for a freelancer.

[14:00] You can't spend all of your time working; you need to eat, sleep, and spend time with your family.

[14:35] You owe it to yourself and your family to make time for marketing.

[14:55] Remember, not everything that happens to you is your fault.

[15:20] The little failures are the useful ones.

[17:55] Don't feel bad about not being productive. However, you do need to take responsibility for it.

[18:10] It sounds simple, but make a list of your tasks.

[20:45] Categorize your tasks as either important, urgent, or not important.

[22:15] Outsource as much stuff as you can.

[23:25] Contact Vicky if you need a VA.

[24:05] You can't outsource everything right away, so just pick something small. [25:40] Buy Vicky's book if you haven't already, and do the exercise in chapter three. [26:20] You're entitled to your time.

Vicky discusses why you have to stop dabbling in your business! It is so frustrating seeing people just do things half-assed. The truth is, you’re never going to get anywhere if you keep chasing shiny object after shiny object. Vicky recommends that you start with the end goal in mind and work backwards from there. It will help you keep focus and you’ll have an easier time figuring out where you should be spending your money.

Key Takeaways:

[1:00] Joe is grumpy because he’s about to go on holiday and he still has a lot to do.

[1:45] But first! A quick update about the chickens.

[4:50] What’s today’s topic about?

[5:30] Vicky explains why she doesn’t like Gary V.

[8:00] Vicky can always tell the difference between a hobby business vs. a real business.

[14:00] Don’t dabble. You will waste money.

[15:25] Dabbling in marketing is just not going to work for you.

[17:25] Start with a clear end goal and then work backwards from there.

[19:30] How do you know if you’re dabbling?

[23:40] Remember, you don’t emerge from a business 100% ready to go. It takes time.

[24:00] Set a goal you’d like to achieve in your life and focus on it.

[24:55] Tune in next week! Vicky and Joe will be discussing how to come up with unique content for your business.

Vicky invites Mark Silva, headline writer extraordinaire, to the show. Mark discusses what some of the key elements of a good headline are and how you can incorporate good headline writing into your articles. Headlines are not meant to be complex. Key Takeaways:

[1:15] Who is Mark Silva?

[2:15] Why does Mark enjoy writing headlines?

[3:45] You always want to think about the reader when writing articles.

[6:25] What is the most important job of a headline?

[8:50] What are the elements of a good headline?

[11:50] More often than not, the first headline that you come up with will be your best one.

[13:35] What kind of mistakes do writers tend to make in their articles?

[19:15] Try to write headlines that can be read in two ways, not just one. Mark explains a bit further as to what he means.

Vicky and Joe sit down with their cold beer and talk about work-life balance. Long gone are the days where Vicky is stressed and overworked, right? Well, not quite. Vicky admits on the podcast that it’s difficult for her to take a step back and try and not do ‘all the things’. Her Monday to-do lists are often a mile long and there’s only so much one can do in a day. So, how does she get work done vs. live the life that she wants? Find out on this week’s episode.

Key Takeaways:

[1:45] There is no such thing as ‘one day’ the only day that exists is today.

[4:00] How does Vicky manage to do so much work? Answer: No sleep, cocaine, and sugar.

[5:35] This podcast episode has been inspired by a podcast episode Vicky heard on The Copywriter Club podcast.

[6:45] Vicky has so many things to do, and sometimes, it stresses her out.

[9:00] Vicky is doing a bit of a workload restructuring right now so she doesn’t feel overwhelmed.

[11:00] With all that being said, we so often hear people having that ‘hustle’ and being on ‘Team No Sleep’, but this mentality is toxic, and frankly, not healthy.

[13:30] We spend 18 years of our lives, sometimes more, being trained on how to be an employee.

[16:40] ‘Being an entrepreneur’ was never an option for Vicky when she was growing up, and she’s seeing the same thing happen with today’s youth.

[20:35] When things don’t go well, we end up working harder. Sometimes, we need to take a step back and not work harder, but work on the things that will give us results.

[24:30] So, take a step back and think about the bigger picture. What do you want your life to look like?

[29:40] Don’t build the business first, and then build your life. Build your life first, have the life you want first!

Vicky and Joe discuss why people simply aren’t buying from you. In fact, Vicky lists some of the main reasons why people will choose to move on or ignore you when they come to your website. Avoid these mistakes at all costs and really reevaluate your website to help boost those conversion rates!

Key Takeaways:

[0:50] FYI. Joe can’t read.

[1:10] Ms. Pickles (one of Vicky’s hens) is officially traumatized .

[4:15] The lesson learned here? Don’t try to lay a bigger egg than what your butt can cope with.

[8:35] We tend to be very bad at asking for what we want. And when you don’t ask, you don’t get what you need.

[10:55] So, why aren’t people buying from you? It’s because you haven’t asked!

[16:35] You have to help people get to where you want them and in order to do that you have to tell them what to do!

[18:35] Be strong with your request. Don’t say ‘look forward to hearing from you’. IT’S WEAK!

[20:25] Color your website buttons accordingly.

[21:00] Don’t hide your calls to action.

[22:55] Vicky and Joe will be leaving you on a cliffhanger. Sorry! Tune in next week for the continuation of this episode.

Vicky and Joe discuss all the shitty advice that’s going around that you absolutely must ignore. Vicky has come up with a list of 13 things that are so common, people believe them to be true! In reality, these phrases are damaging to you and your business. Vicky hopes you can see through these shitty pieces of advice and find the real people who can truly help you succeed.

Key Takeaways:

[0:50] Joe is sick :(.

[1:25] Today’s topic is about shitty advice.

[2:10] You have to hustle 24/7!!!

[3:30] Hustle is necessary, but it should not be done 24/7.

[5:35] People telling newbies to say yes to everything. Here’s a hint: Don’t.

[6:45] “Follow your passion and money will follow.” This is just shitty advice.

[8:45] ‘Heartpreneurs’ - how is this a thing? The title makes Vicky want to vomit.

[9:10] Are you 100% sure about your decision? You don’t have to be.

[14:30] You need tons of money to make your business happen. Lies!!

[16:15] Never, ever give up. You know, if things just aren’t working out, it’s okay to pivot.

[17:15] Vicky believes you should not take business advice from somebody who is broke.

[21:55] Should you write the way you talk? Not if you ramble.

[24:50] Remember, you can be anything you want to be - Watch out for this one!

[27:15] Is the customer always right? Nope!

[30:20] Like this rant? Let Vicky know!

Vicky and Joe discuss why you should be more like Star Trek’s Borg race. Yes, the Borg is evil and wants to enslave all humans, but that’s besides the point. The Borg has some fantastic lessons that every business owner can learn from. Are you currently experiencing some resistance from within yourself? Well, all you have to do is look to the Borg for answers.

Key Takeaways:

[1:30] Joe looks like a tomato right now. Why did he not wear sunscreen?!

[2:15] Question to the listeners: Do you make excuses?

[3:00] People will always find a reason why they can’t do something.

[5:20] According to the Borg, resistance is futile.

[6:00] Another thing, the Borg don’t do the same thing over and over again. They adapt, and quickly.

[8:15] Sometimes you experience strong resistance within yourself, but you don’t even know why, or what, is stopping you.

[10:20] So, what are some of the core reasons why resistance occurs?

[14:00] Going on this entrepreneurial path alone can only take you so far. A group will help push you to new heights.

[17:10] The most important thing you can do is learn from other people.

[20:15] Vicky breaks down her process of how she gets big daunting tasks done.

[25:00] If you’re serious about getting stuff done, you need a deadline.

[29:40] Remember, resistance is futile!! Talk to you next week.

Vicky points out in today’s episode that so many ‘professionals’ are so, so boring. It doesn’t have to be this way! You can be professional in your line of work, but you can also incorporate some of your personality into it too. For example, Vicky, who is not very serious by nature, has a ton of hobbies that she showcases on Instagram. People get a better feel for who she is and what kind of (fun!) person she is. People want to relate to you as a person. Nobody loves a blank face with a suit.

Key Takeaways:

[1:15] Thank you Sarah for sending Vicky and Joe this fantastic gin! Wowzas.

[2:45] Business and marketing should be fun!

[3:15] This is not to say you should always be having fun in your business, but the work that you do should be enjoyable.

[4:10] On a side note, can you order goats via the post?

[6:00] People on LinkedIn are so serious and the info they have is so boring. Helpful, but boring.

[10:15] What is professionalism anyway?

[12:00] Even if you’re in an industry that’s super serious, that doesn’t mean you have to be boring too!

[18:20] Do NOT air your dirty laundry out in public. That’s taking things a bit too far.

[19:45] Talk about your problems in the past sense because no one wants to give money to someone who doesn’t have their shit together.

[21:45] You can inject your personality into serious businessy things. Vicky, by nature isn’t very serious, but she is currently using Instagram to bring to life her personality.

[24:45] Also, stop giving a shit what people think about you. Serve your customers, ignore the rest.

[26:10] Your unique hobbies are what will differentiate you and make you interesting.
