Vicky and Joe sit down for another engaging episode on the Business for Superheroes podcast. Vicky first goes into a little pet peeve she has with people who claim to be copywriters when in fact they're just writers. The key difference between the two is that copywriters have to include an element of psychology and persuasion into their content, whereas writers do not. Vicky and Joe also discuss business lessons you can learn from the TV show Breaking Bad.

Key Takeaways:

[2:45] Vicky has a waiting list for her potential clients, right now.

[4:25] Someone on Facebook was looking for a copywriter. Out of curiosity, Vicky checked out the candidates and she found the copy from their websites were absolutely horrid.

[4:50] Not everyone can be a copywriter.

[5:05] A copywriter doesn't just write. They know how to use psychology and persuasion.

[5:30] Hang around people who are better than you and you will become better at your craft.

[10:20] You have to look out for yourself before you can look out for anyone else.

[13:50] Let's talk Meth.

[14:15] Vicky and Joe love Breaking Bad and talk on some of the key business lessons you can learn from Walter himself.

[19:15] Vicky genuinely recommends watching Breaking Bad if you own a business.

[21:50] In order for your product to be good, you need to do your research and you need to be good at what you do.

[22:05] If you're doing too many things at once, it ends up diluting everything.

[23:25] Watch Breaking Bad if you haven't already!

[23:55] Shout out to Aaron who is listening to the podcast.

[25:00] Feel free to email Vicky anytime!

Vicky asks an important question in today's discussion with Joe. What are you doing currently to generate more clients and customers for your business? How about, who are your dream clients? Vicky recommends writing down the top 100 people/customers/companies you'd like to do business with and then develop a nine step direct mailing campaign. In this episode, Vicky explains why you should do this and shares creative examples on how you can do it.

Key Takeaways:

[1:20] What are Joe and Vicky drinking tonight?

[2:15] What are you doing to find clients and customers?

[3:15] Do you have a 'dream' client?

[5:45] It's difficult to change, change is hard.

[5:55] Take a second to see how you behave and if it consistently bugs you, do something about it.

[8:00] The only reason why Vicky signed up to run a half marathon is because she really liked the medal they give you.

[10:15] Consider sending a direct mail to your dream client.

[12:15] Vicky talks about a carpet cleaner and what he was doing right.

[12:45] Make a list of the top 100 companies you'd like to work with and then make a direct mail plan.

[13:25] Vicky and her client sent handcuffs in the mail and it generated around half a million quid worth of business in the first two weeks.

[14:50] Put together a nine step mailing campaign.

[16:15] This does require an investment upfront. It's not free.

[17:40] Learn from Vicky's mistakes, but sometimes you just gotta make mistakes and learn from them.

[18:25] What was the best direct mail Joe has received?

[24:50] Watch what this cat litter company did to target their customers. Link in the show notes.

[25:20] Next week Vicky will be talking about ROI!

Vicky shares a quick recap of last week's episode and how she can still be a victim of a fixed mindset. Vicky and Joe discuss their love for Buster Keaton and why he's so good at building relationships. Buster used to ask his audience for feedback on his performances, but the main message of what Buster did so well was building a strong connection with his audience. Vicky and Joe break down further on why you should always focus at least an hour a day on marketing.

Key Takeaways:

[1:55] Vicky and Joe are trying to buy a house.

[2:25] Banks are assholes.

[2:35] Vicky realizes she has been taking the power away from herself by having a fixed mindset.

[4:00] Vicky can either choose to be stressed for things she can't control or choose not to be stressed.

[4:45] Buster Keaton! He's awesome!

[5:15] The next person to leave the most useful review on iTunes/Stitcher Radio will receive a Buster Keaton collection.

[9:30] How do you eat spaghetti?

[11:25] Buster Keaton understood the value of connecting with his audience and building relationships.

[11:55] Biggest strategic mistake small business owners make? Focusing on the short-term.

[14:15] While you're saying yes to everything, you're missing the real opportunities.

[14:35] You have to set time to market yourself every day.

[15:05] All you need is an hour a day if you have a focused plan.

[15:45] Where's the easiest money? In existing customers.

[17:10] What do rich taxi drivers do?

[18:55] Don't chase the transactional customer, they are temporary and they are cheap.

[24:55] Shoot-out to Jen!

[25:15] Vicky is a very much ‘what you see is what you get’ type of person.

Vicky and Joe sit down to discuss the differences between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset. Vicky is currently listening to an audiobook titled Mindset by Carol Dweck and discusses some of the points the author makes in the book. Both Vicky and Joe agree that working with someone with a fixed mindset is not only annoying but frustrating as well, because you know they have the ability to do it.

Key Takeaways:

[1:55] Let's talk about mindset!

[2:25] Vicky was interviewed on the Renegade Recruiter and is happy with the outcome!

[2:45] Vicky talks about the biggest challenge she has had to overcome in the last few years.

[3:20] Did you know Vicky used to be a jerk? She doesn't know why people are still friends with her.

[6:00] It's not about being clever, it's about working hard.

[6:35] People in a fixed mindset say 'I can't do that' and it's draining.

[7:40] We are able to learn and change.

[7:55] Having a growth mindset doesn't mean you're going to be endlessly cheerful all the time.

[9:40] Joe talks about Richard, one of the podcast’s listeners.

[11:00] It's nice getting a positive email or a comment from someone.

[14:10] Joe works with someone who won't take any risks.

[15:30] Vicky talks about Viki Shanks, an author.

[17:50] We spend too much time comparing ourselves to others.

[23:15] If you've never seen a Buster Keaton film, then you need to sort your life out!
