Want to make more money fast? Of course, you do. So this week, Vicky dragged Neil O'Brien and a dead Italian dude onto the podcast to show you how. Okay, there are no zombies, but Neil shares the secret of how he's taken the 80/20 principle and used it to give his clients HOOOOOOOOGE profit-boosts. You can do the same, and it'll only take you around 30 minutes, a stiff gin, and a couple of uncomfortable conversations. A bit like a first date, really. Tune in, and spend the festive period plotting.

Key Takeaways:

[1:05] Who is Neil and what does he do?

[1:55] How is Neil a consultant for the 80/20 principle?

[3:40] Neil explains his business process.

[4:05] There’s a lot of emotional attachment towards firing some of your clients.

[5:20] How can people get started in this process? Know your numbers!

[7:55] What kind of improvements has Neil seen in his clients after they’ve fired some of their clients?

[9:35] Look at your gross profit and see how much time goes into each of your clients.

[13:40] Just by taking out one sardine (bad client) and replacing it with a whale (high-profit client), you can increase your profits by an extra 40%.

[15:05] It can be hard to get rid of your sardines, but it opens you up to allow for more work with your whales.

[17:30] What’s the first step someone should take to get started?

[21:15] What's next for Neil?

[13:20] Just tell people! Tell people your story.

[15:00] What has been Jen’s biggest challenge with writing her book?

[19:45] Mike reflects on some of the fun he has had while writing his book with a group of people.

[22:50] Jennifer is in the middle of working on her website, so find out more about her in Vicky’s newsletter.

If you want to grow your business and work with people who make your toes tingle and your face smile, you definitely need to look for people who are as weird as you. Then you need to protect them and nurture them and make them want to spend all their time with you. Vicky and Joe will give you a few pointers and loudly include disclaimers about not being inappropriate.

Key Takeaways:

[3:30] Vicky has very bad sheep that like to disappear!!

[6:20] By the way, blanket forts with cheese and gin are great.

[7:10] The biggest businesses in the world create ‘blanket forts’ for their customers.

[10:00] Businesses offer certain benefits to their most loyal customers.

[10:25] How can you attract (and keep) loyal customers?

[13:15] Create paid-for events like workshops and trainings.

[16:50] Most networking groups are awful! You’re not mixing with people who are lifting you up.

[20:45] Create a loyalty program for your customers.

[22:45] You can always give recognition to your customers and make them feel extra special.

[24:25] Constantly be in touch with your contacts! Do not just disappear.

Breaking Bread Mastermind

Nov 2, 2018

It's rock and roll at The Dingle tonight as Vicky and Joe are drinking peppermint tea. The Dingle features heavily at the start of this episode, but the new staircase is totally relevant to your business. As is storytelling. Yep: we're on the storytelling train AGAIN and you'd better buckle up and listen in if you want to build the kinds of connections that create raving fans who pay you lots of money for what you do. Tune in to hear Joe's shock at discovering he's the sidekick in this podcast – and find out why they're talking about sidekicks at all. This quirk is easy to jump on – so pour us into your ears and get cracking.

Key Takeaways:

[1:35] The stairs are almost finished in the house!

[2:50] Sometimes, in your business or in your life, it can feel like you’re not getting anywhere.

[4:55] We are diving into quirk number 3 today!

[6:10] Facts tell and stories sell!

[6:55] Why are stories so powerful?

[8:25] What stories should we be telling?

[12:15] Your story has to be REAL. Don’t try to fake this.

[14:55] Whatever stories you tell, it has to make a connection with your audience.

[15:40] Stories share real experiences, not just facts.

[17:45]Who are the characters in your story?

[18:45] When sharing your client’s story, who are the characters in their story?

[20:10] Richard Branson was told he’d never amount to anything.

[21:40] You don’t need to have a rags to riches story.

[24:05] Share something about yourself that’s intimate. You need to create a connection with your reader/listener.

[26:15] Save the date 26-28th of July! Join Vicky and Misty in Portugal next year!

Neat gin? Again? Yep. And also interesting history lessons. Although it sounds like Vicky swallowed a Wikipedia page, she didn't. She's just a language nerd who goes off on Esperanto Safari – stay with us, because it's all relevant to how you can grow a more successful business. Yep, we're on Quirk Number 2, and Vicky and Joe explain why you need your own language, and how it'll help you gather more raving fans. This podcast also contains sheep, and roofs that aren't collapsing.

Key Takeaways:

[2:30] Handmade, custom oak staircases are actually really expensive. FYI.

[5:40] Today, Vicky is going to teach you how to speak Esperanto! (Not really).

[5:55] What is Esperanto?

[8:50] There are several thousands of people who learned Esperanto as their native  language.

[9:55] There are people who have also learned Klingon just for fun!

[10:30] Vicky has a quick Star Trek tangent.

[11:25] Joe finds all this unofficial language stuff absurd.

[17:40] Do you have your own language? Well, you should. Vicky explains why.

[18:30] If you’re forming or building a tribe, you want your people to feel a close connection with you.

[21:20] Create a very simple, yet very ‘you’ language that people can get behind and support.

[22:55] Really, really want to join the Breaking Bread mastermind? You might have missed your chance, but sending an emergency email might save you.

[23:35] Next, Vicky and Joe will be diving into the 3rd quirk successful business owners have!

Vicky couldn't be bothered to open tonic, so she and Joe are drinking neat gin and failing to come up with good episode names for this podcast mini-series. That's right: this is the start of a podcast mini-series! All about the 7 Quirks of Super-Rich-And-Famous Business Owners. Quirk 1 lands in your ears today, and is all about finding your niche. Which you gotta do, dude. Honestly. Listen to Vicky's tale of how she should have done this years ago... and what exciting adventures she's about to embark on now. (This episode could well make you rich – maybe possibly.)

Key Takeaways:

[2:55] Episode 144! Wow. If you’ve listened to all of these, send Vicky an email.

[4:30] Vicky has struggled so much with the ‘Niche-O-Matic’.

[5:25] Vicky recently discovered why she’s struggled so hard over the years.

[6:35] So, what is Vicky’s new niche?

[9:10] Why do people need to specialize and find a niche?

[11:05] Every year it gets harder and harder to get your respective client’s attention.

[13:10] You get paid more when you specialize.

[17:00] There will be fewer people doing what you do, which means you will have higher conversion rates.

[19:10] Vicky shares some real-world examples of people specialising in their niche!

[25:05] Are you struggling in your niche? Come to San Diego!!!

Breaking Bread Mastermind

Oct 12, 2018

Vicky and Joe have been beaten into submission by their livers, so this post-holiday podcast is powered by peppermint tea. In it, they throw around accidental innuendos (in YOUR endo) and explain in painful detail why you can't get started. Writing your book, that is. Or anything else, in fact. Tune in and find out what's holding you back, and the simple (but maybe not easy) things you can do to get started. Oh, and this podcast also contains purring.

Key Takeaways:

[2:55] Why is getting started so tough?

[5:00] Do you consider yourself not ‘qualified enough’ to write a book?

[6:45] If you can easily talk about your business for more than an hour, then you are an expert!

[7:50] Who are ‘you’ to write a book? Beat that imposter syndrome.

[10:20] What you know is very valuable. Don’t underestimate yourself.

[15:15] For example, Vicky would love to read a book about sheep keeping!

[17:10] What kind of person are you? What do you stand for?

[19:25] Who are you writing for? What problem are you trying to solve?

[22:00] Vicky shares examples of how everyday professionals can benefit from writing and selling a book.

[27:00] What are people googling or searching for? Can you answer those questions in a book format?

[28:15] Vicky offers a quick recap of what you need to do to get started.

[28:45] Any questions? Email Vicky!

[29:40] Vicky and Misty will be hosting a mastermind in San Diego! Come join them.

Vicky and Joe are in a tent. In France. And they’re worried they may have become lost in the zombie apocalypse... but they still want you to write your bloody book. Yes, even if you’re a mechanic. In fact, ESPECIALLY if you’re a mechanic. Listen up and Vicky will demolish all your excuses toot sweet. And drop a big value bomb on your butt.

[3:45] Vicky and Joe feel like they’re in the Twilight Zone.

[8:45] Anything you can put in a book, your readers can go and look up for free, and that’s okay!

[10:40] However, that doesn’t mean it’s okay to write ‘just another fluff book’ in a weekend.

[11:35] Would professionals like, say, hairdressers benefit from writing a book?

[14:10] If you’re in the business of solving people’s problems, then people will benefit from your book.

[14:50] Would car mechanics benefit from writing a book? YES!

[17:35] What happens if you’re not a good writer?

[19:45] At the Breaking Bread mastermind, Vicky will break down the process of how to write a book!

[22:40] But there are already books written about your subject! What can you write that’s new?

This week, Vicky and Joe load up on damson gin and hurtle off in a totally different direction. Tune in for an aural tour of The Dingle, find out why Vicky is running this business of hers, and what she does when she's not podcasting or writing. This podcast also contains super-cute sheep and a VERY angry cat (seriously, the cat totally stomps on Vicky's profound idea and basically kills the podcast deader than a T-Rex). You'll get to pry into the secret life of The Dingle, and you'll learn the biggest lesson Vicky took from her brain melt-down of a few weeks ago.

Key Takeaways:

[1:20] Vicky and Joe share what they’ve been up to at The Dingle!

[4:50] When you’re a little too comfortable, you have no incentive to do anything.

[6:20] Vicky is starting to work with a life coach to help her get to the next step.

[8:00] When Vicky and Joe moved into the The Dingle for the first time, it needed...some work.

[11:50] You think you know what it’s like to renovate a house, but when you actually do it, you realize it’s a huge money pit.

[14:15] Vicky and Joe do a quick tour of The Dingle.

[19:30] What kind of animals do Vicky and Joe have?

[22:40] Did you know birds can go into shock?

[25:45] You don’t have to be 100% busy all the time, because that’s no way to live or do your best work.

[28:00] It’s okay just spending time enjoying life.

[29:40] Do you have any questions about The Dingle, Vicky’s business, or even her melt-down? Send her an email!

[12:15] Do not answer the phone whenever it rings. It destroys your train of thought.

[13:15] Let people know when you respond to emails!

[16:00] Be diligent with who you talk to and avoid people who waste your time.

[17:35] If you can’t meet with the decision maker, then cancel the meeting.

[19:55] If a client cancels on you at the last minute, send them an invoice.

[24:05] Set a timeline for client feedback, and charge them for it too! That way you’re not waiting months and months to get something done!

[25:15] How do you communicate this with your customer?

[30:55] Always under promise so you can over deliver!

[32:10] Have questions? Feel free to message Vicky!

Scrooge McDuck makes an appearance, and Joe schools Vicky on McDuck's shameless behaviour with the filthy lucre. Also: Why is our attitude to money so screwed up? Why is the internet so full of haters? Why do we all think we're champion mind readers? Find out in the latest episode of The Business For Superheroes Show.

[1:35] Thank you so much for all your responses to the burnout/ anxiety episode!

[3:10] Vicky has recently decided to decrease her income.

[8:40] What causes people to believe they don’t deserve money?

[11:40] Money is a tool and a lot of people use it for good.

[12:40] If your business is not profitable, there’s no way you can even begin to help others around you.

[17:10] How do you -really- know how much your clients are willing to pay you?

[20:25] Vicky answers a listener’s question about asking for a deposit upfront before any work has been done.

Vicky is joined by a real-life TechnoWizard, who walks her through how to use technology without having it explode. (Seriously, a projector started smoking while she was using it once.) Kyle Heath talks about how business owners can use technology to save time, money, and effort – and how to not get incredibly frustrated. He also talks about our impending robot overlords, the rise of AI, and ultimately how all this amazing tech is going to help bring people together and live better lives. Especially those who might be marginalised or have difficulty accessing the "normal" world. This episode is powered by tea, not gin, because we made it at 10am and that's a bit early even for Vicky.

Key Takeaways:

[2:10] Who is Kyle and what does he do?

[4:30] As a business owner, you want to be able to run 80% of your business from your mobile phone.

[5:35] Kyle gives a couple of examples of the types of things you can do to conduct business with your phone.

[8:15] Today’s AI on our phones has really, really advanced. So you can actually write your articles through Speech-To-Text and edit them later.

[11:15] Can you attach your bluetooth keyboards to your phone?

[13:15] What do business owners struggle the most with when it comes to technology?

[14:40] Leverage Facebook groups! There are a lot of helpful and techy people in there.

[15:45] Kyle highly recommends subscribing to a couple of feeds in Feedly to get up-to-date info.

[17:10] If you’re a total tech illiterate, where do you start?

[20:30] Sometimes when people are fearful of the future and where technology/ AI is going, they think it’s going to be a complete dystopian nightmare. Actually, quite the opposite!

[24:50] Kyle shares some common problems he helps his customers with.

[25:40] Don’t be afraid to experiment!

[27:35] Look into buying refurbished products to save on business expenses.

[30:00] Kyle recommends a couple of apps for you to check out!

Get ready for a depressing woe-filled dirge as Vicky and Joe discuss the bane of business owners: burnout. Just kidding: it's not a woe-filled dirge – but be warned. There is some self-indulgent, self-deprecating ranting going on. Nobody ever talks about this shit, and silence breeds misery, so this week we're tackling depression, burnout, and anxiety – and how to avoid it. Fun fun fun! There's also a lot of love for Vicky's Superheroes, clients, and friends. And, of course, Joe and The Dingle Menagerie. In all seriousness, if this podcast helps one person, it was worth it. Take care of yourself.

Key Takeaways:

[2:00] Vicky and Joe give a quick update on some of the things that have been happening at the cottage.

[7:15] Vicky has dealt with depression and anxiety throughout her whole life. Some days are harder than others.

[10:55] Social media doesn’t show you the real side of life.

[12:10] Sometimes, you can feel so alone and like you’re the only person going through it, but that’s not true.

[15:55] What are some of the signs you’re getting burned out?

[18:30] By the way, this is not a pity party for Vicky at all. It’s to bring awareness to these issues.

[22:00] Lately, Vicky has had a hard time even getting out of bed.

[27:00] If you need help, please go get help and talk to someone about it.

[29:15] Thank you to everyone for being so supportive, especially Joe!

Yep: it's true. All those woo-woo pollyannas out there can do one. Positive thinking is BAD FOR YOU. Okay, not all of it, but there's something much better out there that'll help you build a fabulous life and business, and Vicky and Joe are here to share it with you. Also featuring rhubarb gin, and an interesting elbow bruise.

Key Takeaways:

[2:00] Positive thinking is bad for you!

[2:40] What is a pollyanna?

[4:45] Positive thinking is a massive industry and Vicky believes it’s America’s fault. (Sorry America).

[7:40] Negative emotions can benefit your overall psychological health.

[9:30] People who believe that our emotions are flexible and changeable are more likely to blame themselves when they experience negative emotions.

[11:20] You can’t appropriately deal with your negative emotions if you don’t acknowledge them consciously.

[14:00] What does the data say about positive thinking?

[16:35] Pessimists were less prone to depression after experiencing a negative life event.

[19:00] You can’t think your way out of a serious illness. Positivity helps, but it doesn’t cure you.

[21:15] Did you know window shopping makes you feel as good as actual shopping psychologically?

[23:35] The physical act of smiling can make you feel happier.

[26:40] What can people do to improve their outcomes? Vicky offers some actionable steps.

[29:40] Can you turn back time by simply ‘acting’ younger?

[32:35] Vicky offers some final takeaways from this week’s show.

[33:20] Like this podcast? Please share it!

Vicky chokes on her beer (yes, BEER – because they failed to keep enough tonic water in stock). Joe bleeds everywhere. Mark Twain's real name makes an appearance, and Oprah Winfrey pops in (again not really, just her wisdom). Vicky explains why everyone should do a moustache-based striptease in the style of Charlie Chaplin, and Joe explains why the winner of a pole dance competition wasn't the obvious choice. This week, Vicky and Joe are talking about confidence: what it is, why it's important (according to actual SCIENCE), and how to have it.

Key Takeaways:

[2:35] What is confidence?

[4:45] Be proud to take credit for your hard work. Claim it! Don’t brush it off as a ‘fluke’.

[5:35] Believe in your ability.

[6:25] You get in life what you have the courage to ask for.

[7:45] Why is confidence is so important?

[9:10] Arrogance is shouting about it, but confidence is just doing it.

[10:45] Outside of business, why is confidence important?

[14:00] Cologne vs. no cologne, which made men more confident?

[16:30] By the way, how you praise people is incredibly important. You can give constructive feedback while also boosting someone’s confidence.

[18:15] If more people were confident, the world would be a better place!

[18:25] How can you improve your confidence?

[22:15] Make an active effort to get better in a skill set.

[24:00] Do you ever get scared about doing something for the very first time?

[26:00] It’s okay to be selfish! Take care of yourself. You don’t have to ‘give, give, give’ all the time.

[28:50] Is there something you don’t like about yourself? Fix it!

[30:35] If you’re always comparing yourself to other people. You will always fall short.

[32:25] Ask for the things you want in life! No is better than nothing.

[32:50] Tune in next week to find out why positive thinking is bad for you!

Vicky started on the gin slightly early, and burbles. Also, some sentences get together in a big cosy cuddle when they should be segregated. Joe questions who Ryan Reynolds is, and why Vicky loves him so (he looks a bit like Joe, is one reason). Richard Branson pops in (not really actually IN as a guest, more as a fine example of great business ownerness) and Vicky tells her pole instructor she's completely awesome (she is). Finally, they dive into this week's topic: how your own brain is holding itself back with limiting beliefs you probably picked up during childhood. But they don't stop there: you also get a 4-step plan for demolishing those damaging limiting beliefs and replacing them with something more constructive instead.

Key Takeaways:

[2:40] Do you have self-limiting beliefs?

[3:15] With that being said, at 42, you're probably not going to win a gold medal at the Olympics.

[4:15] What stories do you tell yourself?

[6:30] Are you 'unconsciously' putting yourself down?

[6:55] What are self-limiting beliefs exactly?

[9:40] Whether you like it or not, everybody has limiting beliefs.

[11:50] Vicky shares some examples of limiting beliefs about money.

[15:30] If you don't believe in yourself, then you'll have a hard time achieving your dreams.

[18:15] If you're ever angry or feel stuck, ask yourself why and dig deep to find its core. Chances are, a limiting belief is stopping you.

[21:45] Limiting beliefs are holding you back!!

[23:55] How can you defeat these limiting beliefs and get back on track?

[27:35] What would a successful/ beautiful/ talented person do in your place? Take those thoughts and ideas and fuel yourself with it. Take action with it!

[28:55] Have a question about limiting beliefs? Send Vicky an email!

Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki and Sharon Lechter

Jul 20, 2018

Vicky finally learns to do her own makeup, so subjects Joe to a video podcast (check out YouTube). They talk about how it's definitely the winning that counts – despite the kind words of lots of people. As for actually winning: you won't do so if you're not good enough (like Vicky at her pole comp) – but that's actually a good thing, because losing helps you get better. They set the world to rights and rant about racist dickheads. This week's gin is orange. Finally, definitely check out the video if you want to see Joe and Vicky's 15 chins.

Key Takeaways:

[2:10] Vicky turns 40 next year and has...never figured out makeup.

[4:45] Vicky didn’t win a pole dancing competition recently. Why? Because she was not good enough.

[5:45] If you don’t lose, then how are you ever going to improve?

[8:00] There’s nothing wrong with wanting to win! But don’t strive for it at someone else’s expense.

[8:40] Want to improve your skills? Watch yourself on video and analyse it.

[14:00] One day when we’ve achieved ______, we will be happy! Well, this is a lie.

[16:35] Side rant: Vicky unfriended someone on Facebook.

[19:15] Immigrants taking your job away is not the bottom-line problem at the end of the day.

[21:25] How are you going to fix things? How are you going to make it better?

[22:30] If you’re looking for ways to say ‘it’s not my fault’, you will find them.

[25:30] Focus on yourself and ignore what other people are doing. Focus on being a better person.

Go for No! by Andrea Waltz and Richard Fenton

Jul 13, 2018

Why are you STILL doing that? Even though it's not working? Honestly, get over it. In this episode, we wrestle with a raspberry seed stuck in Vix's teeth, a tragic lack of gin (due to illness), and why human brains are wired to screw us over. We dig deep into the sapien’s cranium, pull out the entrails of the sunk cost fallacy, and examine them closely – then we show you how to avoid wasting even more time and money and effort than you already have. Oh, and you'll find out how and why Vicky wasted THOUSANDS of pounds because her brain tricked her. She sets fire to money so you don't have to.

Key Takeaways:

[2:05] Vicky went camping and a rampaging badger chased after her. They’re sturdy creatures.

[7:05] Have you ever bought something and regretted it?

[10:30] Sunk cost fallacy drives poor life choices, and terrible government and business decisions.

[10:50] Vicky shares her first sunk cost fallacy experience in her business.

[16:40] Listing the benefits of your products and services is a good thing, but don’t forget about the ‘if you do nothing…’ option. Fear of staying the same scares a lot of people .

[20:35] Your marketing needs to be at a point where people don’t think of your product as a cost. They need to think, “I need this.”

[22:15] Wasting money is painful.

[25:40] Don’t put up with an asshole client just because you’re in the process of doing work for them. You don’t get that time back!

[27:25] As rational as we think we are, we actually don’t end up seeing our own biases.

[30:30] Are you measuring, testing, and looking at your numbers carefully?
