Notes in the Margin

This is a podcast about one woman's mission to help entrepreneurs and business owners write and self-publish better business books. Each week, we tackle your writing excuses (because they're our excuses too) – and help you beat the Blank Page Of Doom so you can write a book that makes a real difference. Also contains adulting fails, the adventures of the TinySheeps, and a bundle of fantastic interviews with people far smarter than us. Find us at moxiebooks.co.uk.

Vicky and Joe continue their discussion about how to discover your ideal customer demographic through the use of….empathy! It is not enough to know their age, job title, and marital status. No, you need to dig deeper. You need to pull at their heartstrings, because no one buys based purely on facts alone. What does your customer do on Sunday and Monday mornings? This insight is valuable and over 90% of businesses don’t take this extra step to truly get to know their customer’s pain.

Key Takeaways:

[0:45] It’s Vicky’s birthday tomorrow!

[4:20] The more Vicky thinks about people, the more she realizes that having empathy just doesn’t happen naturally to most of us.

[9:00] Having empathy is incredibly important if you want to sell to people.

[9:25] We spend a lot of time speaking in fact, but that’s not what gets people to buy.

[12:55] You need to get into your customer’s heads.

[13:50] What does your target market do on Sunday and Monday mornings, and why?

[18:10] If your target market rides the tube every morning, well, get on the tube! This is research!

[20:10] Vicky learned an interesting lesson from the muppets.

[22:20] Don’t just ask your target audience questions, but watch them (in a non-creepy way).

[26:50] What’s the takeaway for this episode? Learn how to empathize!
